Former refugee brings striking photos of Tibetan nomads to Hong Kong charity exhibition

In case you missed humanitarian photographer Lam Duc Hien’s stunning work at the charitable “Night for Nepal” exhibition in June, here’s a chance for you to do better.

From August 3 to 29, one of the Vietnamese-Laotian photographer’s earliest series, “Tibetans”, will be on display at the Culture Club Gallery in SoHo, with all sale proceeds once again going to the Nepal Youth Foundation for both long-term and immediate earthquake relief work.

The series, a collaborative project with French NGO Equilibre, documents the little-known life of Tibetan nomads who traveled across the North Indian desert in Ladakh in the early 1990s. In an emotionally striking black-and-white style, Lam depicts the unique landscapes of the 5,000-metre altitude desert and its inhabitants.

Born as a refugee on the banks of the Mekong and escaping a Thai  detention centre at the age of nine, Lam has since traveled to dozens of conflict zones around the world, including Bosnia, Rwanda and Chechnya, capturing portraits of human life amidst tragedy and suffering.

His work in Tibet sheds light on a largely untold part of the country’s history, and, hopefully, will play a small part in the story of its future.
