Housewife allegedly steals 6 tortoises worth HKD90,000 from pet shop, sets them free

A woman was charged with two counts of theft after she allegedly stole six tortoises – worth a whopping HKD90,7200 – from a pet store and set them free in the Hong Kong Wetland Park.

On July 30, the housewife, aged 37 and surnamed Chung, went to a pet shop in Yuen Long and stole some tortoises. The next day, obviously emboldened by her success, she went back to try and snatch some more, but got caught. In the end she stole four Eastern African Leopard tortoises and two Aldabra giant tortoises, reports Oriental Daily.

(Fun fact: the Aldabra Giant tortoise is one of the largest tortoise species in the world).

The defendant was yesterday charged with two counts of theft, to which she pleaded guilty.

Chung claimed in court that she stole the tortoises to set them free at the Hong Kong Wetland Park.

The police searched the area but failed to recover the reptiles.

We hope the they’re are safe, happy and not wrecking the local wildlife…
