Hongkonger Natalie Chan, 28, has been named one of the US’ most eligible people working in media and entertainment by dating app Hinge.
Hinge sifted through its user database to find the 270 “most eligible” young professional women and men, and named the top 30 in each of nine key industries.
The app, unlike location-based competitor Tinder, only matches its users with people with whom they already have mutual Facebook friends, thus promising fewer weirdos and losers (in theory).
To prove the apparent higher quality of users – according to their standards at least – the company picked the “most eligible” based on their impressive careers and how often other users liked their profiles.
Chan, a University of Southern California engineering graduate with a master’s degree in education from HKU, told Coconuts HK how she entered the media world when she realised she wanted to have a bigger impact than she thought she would in education, the path she was pursuing at the time.
Fast forward a couple years – including being part of the first Hong Kong Chinese team to participate in the Mongol Rally, a 16,000-kilometre car race from London to the capital of Mongolia – the budding producer is now involved in a handful of different projects in Hong Kong.
She is currently raising funds for “Dream On”, a reality show “with a social purpose” that she conceived with fellow Hongkonger Nick Daryanani. The show plans to change the lives of the city’s underprivileged by giving them a nudge towards pursuing their dreams.
In the pilot, for example, Chan and Daryanani help an African activist, who dreams of spreading the message of unity and tolerance through music, to record a rap song.

Chan has also partnered with local socialite/celebrity Sean Lee Davies, acting as a producer for his company Activis Media, which has made shows for TVB Pearl, and for his non-profit Project C:Change, which focusses on wildlife conservation.
“It caught me by surprise to be selected on the list. It seems silly and you really can’t take the list too seriously. I had a good laugh about it,” Chan told us.
“I find Hong Kong a very exciting place to be single, especially when we get an influx of people from all over the world coming through,” she continued.
But don’t get too excited, single folk.
“At the moment, my focus is on my career. I am on a mission and I simply don’t have the time to date.”
