Indonesian helper arrested after giving birth in employer’s bathroom to baby that dies

An Indonesian domestic helper has been arrested after giving birth to a baby in the bathroom of her employer’s Quarry Bay home.

According to a police source who spoke to the SCMP, the birth occurred at around 1am this morning at The Orchards complex on Greig Road. The police were called at 7:45am when the maid told her employer about the child, which was at this point dead.

The case has been recorded as infanticide (when a mother kills her child within the fist year of life while her mind is disturbed), but it may be reclassified as a miscarriage as the fetus only appeared to be a few months old.

“Tests are needed to establish how old the [fetus] was,” the source said.

“Initial investigation showed that the [baby] had no heartbeat or pulse at the time,” the source added. “It was then wrapped with a towel and put in a plastic bucket before being placed on [the domestic helper’s] bed.”

The woman, who is said to have worked for the employer for six years, reportedly returned to Indonesia briefly to get married in April.

It is understood that she suspected she was pregnant but did not see a doctor.
