Renowned world tour ‘Globe to Globe Hamlet’ to tread the boards in Hong Kong

Where art thou Shakespeare’s Globe? Answer: here next week!

As part of a two-year tour visiting 205 nations, “Globe to Globe Hamlet” will be making a stop in Hong Kong from Sept. 4 to 6, with a total of five shows taking place at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

One of Hong Kong’s own – Jennifer Leong, daughter of LegCo member Alan Leong – stars as Ophelia, Hamlet’s lover, as well as two other male roles in this highly efficient and versatile cast.

She commented, “We’ve already travelled to over a hundred countries, but I’m very excited about finally performing in my hometown Hong Kong.”

Naturally, because we’re the best.

Dominic Dromgoole, The Globe’s artistic director, said, “The central principle of the tour is that Shakespeare can entertain and speak to anyone, no matter where they are on earth; and that no country or people are not better off for the lively presence of Hamlet.”

The troupe has already performed everywhere from beaches to palaces, and travelled by everything from tall ship to areoplane.

In case you are not a fan of the Bard, Shakespeare’s Hamlet tells the story of Prince Hamlet, who is instructed by his father’s ghost to seek vengeance against his uncle Claudius – a man who takes the throne in very poor form, after killing his own brother and wedding Hamlet’s widowed mother.

“Globe to Globe Hamlet” is a new, condensed version of this Shakespearean masterpiece, a production given UNESCO patronage in 2014 for its efforts in global outreach and cultural education.

In honour of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, the last performance will conclude on April 23, 2016.

To go or not to go? To go, of course!
