Woman loses HKD400,000 in mooncake scam, 35-year-old trucker arrested

A man has been arrested in Hong Kong for allegedly scamming local women through the medium of mooncakes. That’s a new one!

One woman lost HKD400,000 on discount coupons for Peninsula mooncakes that never arrived.

She and two other women were apparently lured into the scam via an Instagram post that promised coupons for the popular brand at a 30 percent discount.

They all paid by online transfer (with the other two cake crazies spending HKD70,000 between them), but the promised pastries never arrived.

A 35-year-old truck driver, surnamed Lam, has been arrested in connection to the case. According to Apple Daily, stolen money was recovered from his apartment.

Peninsula mooncakes are wildly popular in the lead up to Hong Kong’s Mid Autumn Festival.

EJI reports that Chinese e-commerce site Taobao was selling them at double the standard price of HKD485 for a box of eight last year.
