Top 5 surprisingly cheap things in Hong Kong, as noticed by a noob

Living in Hong Kong means coughing up ridiculous rent for a room the size of a mouse hole – but hey, miniature is all the rage these days, right? Plus, it makes it ever more exciting when you stumble upon a bargain. And how randomly placed the small price tags are here!

Introducing a list of the top five surprisingly cheap things in Hong Kong, chosen by an impressional newbie who still notices this stuff.

1. Transport

Whether you’re riding the underground, hopping on a ding-ding or setting sail on the Star Ferry, travelling in Hong Kong is deliciously cheap. And as my mother so wisely taught me, less money on travel means more cocktails with dinner. Thank you, Hong Kong (and Mum).

2. Avocados

For a recent avocado-convert like myself, the fact that these delicious little things are practically free in HK is an absolute dream. I’m a little worried that my skin is going to turn green and smushy, but at around HKD10 per fruit, it would be rude not to at least see how the colour looks on me.

3. Novelty Gifts

Mong Kok’s markets may not be the most relaxing places to spend your time, but when family birthdays come around and you’ve got to fork out for postage, cheap, light novelty gifts are the way forward. Grab a knock-off Mulberry wallet for Mum, a Chinese tea set for Nan and one of those aprons with boobs for Pops. Done and dusted for a grand total of HKD90. Shopping has never been so cheap (or sweaty).

4. Happy Valley Races

The fact that entrance to the Happy Velley Races sets you back a mere HKD10 makes losing your money on the gee-gees a lot easier to swallow. With the new racing season having kicked off last Wednesday, I’m hoping this will be the year I learn about odds and stop trying to win my millions based on outfit colours and cute names. Maybe.

5. 7-Eleven Beers

At the start of the month, you’re all about the fancy cocktails and nice dinners. The halfway point comes, and you’ve moved onto happy hours. During the final week or so, funds are low, so it’s back to the trusty 7-Eleven we go. Why spend HKD70 on a single G&T when you can fill your boots with five beers for the same price at Hong Kong’s favourite corner shop? They even provide bottle openers at the doorway.

Pro Tip: Buy beers at 7-Eleven and take them into the races for a crazy cheap Wednesday night. You’re allowed to bring in enough beer for “personal consumption”, but I suggest stashing your tinnies in a backpack if you don’t fancy being judged on your alcohol addiction in front of a crowd of gamblers.

Happy bargain hunting!
