Flipping great! Young green turtles released back into wild after being rescued in Hong Kong

In good news for Hong Kong waters, two juvenile green turtles were released back into the wild yesterday after being found by members of the public at Ma Wan Public Pier and Victoria Harbour.

The young bucks, which weigh 8.4 kilograms and 26 kilograms and measure 42 centimetres and 60 centimetres across their shells respectively, were given to Ocean Park for rehabilitation after being handed in to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) in September 2013 and July this year.

Both turtles have been tagged and given satellite transmitters so the AFCD can generally stalk them and learn more about their feedings grounds and movements.

The globally endangered green turtle is the only species of five turtles seen in Hong Kong that is thought to nest locally.

If you’re lucky enough to spot one ever in your life in Hong Kong, call the AFCD on 1823 so they can be monitored and protected.
