Super dramatic photos and video of Hong Kong’s typhoon shelter blaze

Thanks to committed Coconaut Richard Wilkinson who sent us these unbelievable photos and video footage of the huge blaze at Hong Kong’s Shau Kei Wan typhoon shelter yesterday.

Wilkinson lives in Shau Kei Wan and can see the shelter from his apartment.

The fire started at around 2:40pm when residents of Aldrich Bay heard to loud bang and saw huge plumes of black smoke coming from the shelter.

The blaze is thought to have began on a fishing boat that then brunt through its anchor rope and drifted towards other boats, igniting them too.

More loud bangs were heard as fuel tanks exploded.

As many as six fireboats rushed to the scene, but firefighters said the rescue effort was slowed as boat owners scrambled to get their vessels out of harm’s way.

At least two men and three women suffered minor injuries and had to be taken to hospital.

At least 10 boats were severely damaged.
