Hong Kong’s domestic workers launch city’s first ‘Migrant Zine’

Hong Kong’s first “Migrant Zine” has been launched, telling the stories of the city’s 320,000+ foreign domestic helpers.

Set up by the Mission For Migrant Workers (MFMW) in partnership with HERFund, the magazine, entitled “Work is Work”, was launched at Chater Road on Sunday.

It features stories and poems penned by Hong Kong’s domestic helpers, who received training and help from volunteers from the local media and artistic industries.

Delia Dableo, who contributed to the first Migrant Zine, said, “It was an exciting experience that I was able to write my stories about life as a migrant worker. I’m thankful to the MFMW’s training for giving me this opportunity.”

“The whole process was a learning experience not just for the migrant domestic worker participants but also for the organisers of the project,” said Cynthia Abdon-Tellez, general manager of MFMW.

“Whilst at first it was thought that it would be a challenge to gather the participants and to arouse them to create amidst their work conditions and language barriers, the migrant domestic workers rose to the occasion. The resulting stories will speak for themselves and we are proud of our writers and all other Indonesians and Filipino domestic workers who took part in this worthy exercise.”

The group hopes to receive donations to help them continue the publication. Those interested should email mission@migrants.net or call (+852) 2522-8264.
