McDonald’s diners in Hong Kong eat around body of homeless woman for hours after she died

Unaware diners ate around the dead body of a homeless woman for hours after she died in a Kowloon Bay McDonald’s on Saturday.

The woman, aged between 50 and 60, first entered the outlet in Ping Shek Estate at 8:40am on Friday. CCTV footage shows her suddenly slumping over a table at 1:20am on Saturday morning.

Oblivious diners than continued to eat around her until 8:30am, when staff finally realised she was dead.

Hong Kong’s Social Welfare Department has said it is highly concerned about the plight of the city’s homeless, who often sleep at 24-hour McDonald’s restaurants because they have nowhere else to go.

According to concern groups, not all of the city’s estimated 1,500 homeless people are unemployed, but they choose to sleep rough and spend their money on food rather than Hong Kong’s famously high rents.

Wendy Lam, senior director of corporate affairs at Hong Kong McDonald’s, said the woman did not order food but asked for a glass of water from the counter before taking a seat.

“In order to provide a pleasant dining environment, we would not disturb our customers,” she explained, according to the SCMP.
