Mentally ill woman who was home alone rescued from flat after fire breaks out

A severely mentally ill woman, 46, was rescued from her flat in Tsing Yi after a fire broke out inside at around 6am yesterday. She is currently in a serious condition in hospital.

The woman, surnamed Lee, who needs long-term medication, lives with her 16-year-old son, surnamed Tan, in Cheung Ching Estate, reports Apple Daily.

That morning she had reportedly walked into her son’s room and started to talk non-stop, waking him up. He then left the flat in frustration.

Shortly after, at around 6am, a neighbour noticed smoke coming out of the flat and called for help.

Firefighters arrived on the scene, putting the flames out after 15 minutes. Lee, who suffered from smoke inhalation and whose face was blackened by soot, was rescued and sent to hospital.

The flat has been severely damaged by the fire, which is believed to have originated from the living room sofa. The cause is still unknown.

The social welfare department said that it would follow up on the case.
