Mainland tourist beaten outside Hong Kong jewellery shop dies in hospital

A tourist from mainland China who was beaten unconscious in a fight outside a jewellery store yesterday has died in hospital. Hong Kong police have classified the case as manslaughter.

The 53-year-old construction contractor, surnamed Miao, was announced dead at Queen Elizabeth Hospital at 10:45am this morning. A police source told the SCMP that the man had no serious injuries and that an autopsy would be needed to determine the cause of death.

Miao, from Heilongjiang province, arrived in Hong Kong on Sunday with a tour group of 19.

A fight reportedly broke out at a jewellery shop in Man Lok Street, Hung Hom, yesterday when the 53-year-old’s female colleague refused to make a purchase.

“The victim tried to mediate but was allegedly attacked by a group of four men,” the police source said. “Initial investigation showed he was dragged out of the shop and attacked again.”

Miao, his colleague, and the tour guide were all arrested for fighting in public yesterday.

Today, the 44-year-old local tour guide was picked up in Wan Chai, with the 32-year-old mainland tour leader arrested while conveniently already at Hung Hom police station helping officers with their inquiries.

Two other men are still being sought in connection to the case.
