LegCo member and Civic Party founding member Claudia Mo questioned CY Leung on the government’s obedience to Beijing in a Q&A session yesterday.
Mo brought up the recent removal of British royal ciphers from historical mailboxes as an example of the growing sense of decolonisation in Hong Kong, and asked if the increased intensity of Beijing’s influence would see our city renamed as the pinyin “Xiang Gang.”
The chief executive answered that his alma mater was King’s College High School, which he saw no reason to rename, leaving us wondering if he has ever heard of a rhetorical question.
He also brought out a copy of the Basic Law, and asked Ms. Mo to “notice that the English translation of ‘香港’ is written as ‘Hong Kong’.” Today, we learn that CY Leung is an incredibly literal man.
Leung went on to say that the Hong Kong government does not agree with everything that the central government says; he referenced the limit on milk powder carried by outbound travellers as an example of a decision made by the Hong Kong government which is unpopular on the mainland.
