WeChat: Hong Kong is the happiest place in Greater China

Hong Kong is the happiest place in Greater China according to our WeChat posts – and apparently they weren’t all from Disney Land.

Tencent, the owner of WeChat, revealed in a conference last weekend that “sentiment analysis” of WeChat users’ “moments” (which are similar to your Facebook wall, if you don’t know) shows Hong Kong is the happiest place in Greater China, followed by Taiwan and then Beijing.

Quartz reports that Yunnan, Guangxi and Guizhou on the mainland were said to be the least happy places in the region.

“Using sentiment analysis we’ve discovered that, on average, Hong Kong is actually the happiest, most positive city—or at least, their Moments posts portray [as such],” said WeChat’s international operations and data analytics manager Stephen Wang.

The findings were apparently deducted by looking at the feeds of some of WeChat’s 570 million daily users, although how exactly the “sentiment analysis” was done is unclear.

Who’s guessing they just added up all the smilies and called it a day?
