After the basketball court of its primary school was invaded by around 50 monkeys on Monday, it seems Tsz Wan Shan in Wong Tai Sin has become the new favourite hangout for Hong Kong’s primate population.
The most recent reports come via Apple Daily (as translated by EJI), which claims a little girl had a rather unhappy meal when her McDonald’s food was snatched away from her by a cheeky monkey.
In another incident, two old ladies are said to have had their bananas pinched as they left a supermarket. We’d say you can’t make that stuff up… but we can’t guarantee that.
What there is apparently proof of, however, is that one particularly nonchalant thief – described as being male, hairy and two feet tall (no, not your boyfriend) – sauntered into a convenience store at around 1pm yesterday and stole some bread.
He then apparently sat outside eating his spoils while happily being photographed by passersby/crime reporters.
According to the shop clerk, the monkey snuck in quietly when she had her back turned. She added, however, that the unassuming little fella was a repeat offender, having apparently stolen something else from her earlier in the day.
Animal expert Hui Man-ho told Apple Daily that the monkeys are used to the idea of getting easy food from humans after being indulged by locals in the past.
