CocoBeats: Hong Kong’s 10 best music events this November

As temperatures finally start to drop, why not keep your blood pumping by boogying down to our top ten CocoBeats of the month? You already know the big ‘uns – Elton John, Clockenflap. Here’s what else is going on in November:

Pick Your Pink 17 @ Azure

Start the month right with a pong tourney at LKF’s highest open-air rooftop. This isn’t typical beer pong though, as Azure has replaced lukewarm foamy hops with rosé, and Cliché Records will be there to soundtrack your whole night. There will also be a tapas buffet on hand to line your stomach (an absolute necessity, regardless of the type of pong!), and for the first time, Azure’s rooftop will be open until 3am.

When: 6pm-late, Friday Nov. 6
Where: Azure, 30F, LKF Hotel, 33 Wyndham Street, Central
Price: Free entry
Tickets: RSVP by calling (+852) 3518 9330 or emailing azure@azure.hk

Volar x Love & Beats present Spirit Catcher

Belgian house act Spirit Catcher will be gracing Lan Kwai stalwart Volar with their “polished future disco sound”. Spirit Catcher list this year’s Clockenflap headliners Chic and Nile Rodgers amongst their biggest influences, and it certainly shows in their smooth, funky 70s influenced house beats. Check out what we mean:

When: 10pm till late, Friday Nov. 6
Where: Volar, basement, 38-44 D’Aguilar Street, Central
Price: HKD250 earlybird, HKD300 on the door before 12.30am and HKD350 on the door after 12.30am. At least one drink included.
Tickets: Here

Underground HK x Volcom Brand Jeans present True to This II

True to This is Underground HK’s local music showcase which aims to introduce promising local musicians and encourage Hong Kong youth to stay “true to who they are” (hence the name). The second installment is happening on Friday Nov. 7 and will feature one of the most famous bands from Hong Kong, indie heroes Chochukmo and local punk pop outfit ToNick. Three new local bands will also be invited to perform at the event and share the stage with Chochukmo and ToNick.

When: 7-11pm, Saturday Nov. 7
Where: The Hangout, 1F Youth Outreach Jockey Club, 2 Holy Cross Path, Sai Wan Ho
Price: HKD100
Tickets: Here, or at the Volcom store (Shop 40, LCX, 3F, Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui)

Songs for Children presents Postiljonen

Songs for Children is back again with yet another night of ethereal tunes. SFC have been responsible for bringing some of the best international indie acts to Hong Kong’s shores, and this time looks to be no different. Scandinavian band Postiljonen will be playing their delectable brand of dream pop in Lan Kwai Fong, so we don’t want to hear anybody complaining about indie nights being inconvenient! Hong Kong’s own shoegaze wunderkinds Thud will also be supporting, and concertgoers will be treated to DJ and VJ sets from Songs for Children’s Jane Blondel and Mike Mystery.

When: 7-10pm, Sunday Nov. 8
Where: Graffiti, basement, Ho Lee Commercial Building, 17-18 Lan Kwai Fong
Price: HKD195
Tickets: Here

House of Mercury presents Mr Sipp

After the success of Hiatus Kaiyote and Harts, House of Mercury is closing out The Singleton Discovery Series with blues musician Mr Sipp. The Mississippi guitarist and singer promises to be an enthralling and powerful performer, having recently won at both the prestigious Memphis Blues festival and the International Blues Challenge. What better way to get into the spirit of Thanksgiving than listening to some electrifying, all-American blues music? Have a gander of his winning IBC performance here:

When: 9pm, Saturday Nov. 14
Where: Loft 22, 22F California Tower, 30-32 D’Aguilar Street, Central
Price: HKD420 earlybird incl. one drink, HKD480 advance incl. one drink.
Tickets: Here

Starkill @ Hidden Agenda

Starkill has been labelled many different things: melodic death metal, power metal, thrash metal and symphonic black metal. All you need to know is that they’re pretty damn metal, and attendees will be in for a serious night of hardcore headbanging (no really, they’re very good at doing it in sync). Appropriately, Starkill will be playing at Hong Kong’s premier underground venue, favoured by many a metal outfit, Hidden Agenda. Not recommended for those who can’t handle brutal (sorry, br00t4l) vox and whose experience with melodic heavy metal riffs is limited to playing Dragonforce songs on Guitar Hero.

When: 8.30-11.30pm, Saturday Nov. 14
Where: Hidden Agenda, 2A, Winful Industrial Building, 15-17 Tai Yip Street, Kwun Tong
Price: HKD180 advance, HKD220 on the door, HKD150 for students with valid ID
Tickets: Here

Balmorhea @ Hidden Agenda

Another concert at Hidden Agenda, but more Yndi Halda than Cradle of Filth this time. Six-piece band Balmorhea have previously toured with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Efterklang, Tortoise, Fleet Foxes, CocoRosie and Sharon Van Etten – a list almost as long and varied as the list of instruments they incorporate into their music. Seriously, these guys layer myriad instruments (there’s a marimba involved) to create a rich and subtly nuanced sound somewhere in between folk and post rock.

When: 8-11pm, Tuesday Nov. 17

Where: Hidden Agenda, 2A, Winful Industrial Building, 15-17 Tai Yip Street, Kwun Tong

Price: HKD220 advance, HKD260 on the door, HKD180 for students with valid ID.

Tickets: Here

DJ Revolution presents Kaskade

DJ Revolution are bringing Kaskade, “America’s Best DJ” of 2011 and 2013 to Lan Kwai Fong this month before he heads to Singapore for the annual no-holds-barred extravaganza that is Zoukout. We’re sure Hongkongers chasing that summery Ibiza EDM vibe will be more than satisfied as they rave to their hearts’ content. Unfortunately, we don’t believe that there will be foam to complete the whole Pacha image, but you’ll just have to make do.

When: 10.30-late, Thursday Nov. 19
Where: Bungalow, GF, The Centrium, 60 Wyndham Street, Central
Price: HKD520
Tickets: Here

Underground HK Presents Songs Without Words II

Underground HK is putting on yet another showcase with their second installment of Songs Without Words. Three of Hong Kong’s most formidable instrumental bands – Last Digits, Prune Deer and Omicron – are all scheduled to bring their A game. Don’t think that this will be a one-note event, though. The bands playing range from post-hardcore to instrumental rock and progressive metal.

When: 9.30-late, Saturday Nov. 21
Where: Orange Peel, 2F, 38-44 D’Aguilar Street, Central
Price: HKD120 advance incl. one drink, HKD150 on the door incl. one drink
Tickets: Here

Gabriele Poso

To round off this month’s CocoBeats, we’ve got a bit of a mystery. Italian multi-instrumentalist Gabriele Poso has announced two Hong Kong dates for the end of the month (Saturday Nov. 21 and Saturday Nov. 28), but we’re unable to get any information on ticket prices or outlets. We can tell you however, that Poso’s music is intriguing. He describes it as “alternative jazz”, which doesn’t quite encapsulate its beachy, percussive and almost tropical sound. Until we can get you more details, whet your appetite by checking out Poso’s track, “Invocation 001”:

When: Saturday Nov. 21 and Saturday Nov. 28
Where: Armani / Prive (2F Landmark Chater/Chater House, 8 Connaught Road, Central) and Hotshot (Shop 114-115, The Pulse, 28 Beach Road, Repulse Bay)
Price: TBA
Tickets: TBA
