Loyal pooch grieves by side of dead doggy friend for 10 hours

A stray dog pulled on the heartstrings of passersby in Yuen Long on Wednesday as he openly mourned his dead canine companion in the middle of a road. The incident occurred at around 4pm on Wednesday afternoon, outside a bus station in Kam Tin.

Local residents told Apple Daily that the dogs had been playfully chasing each other when the brown stray ran onto the road, where he was instantly killed by a passing minibus. The survivor, nicknamed Blackie, ran to his friend’s corpse and refused to leave his side for 10 hours. A witness, surnamed Li, said that Blackie was licking the dead dog’s face and fended off other strays who approached the body.

People tried to coax Blackie out of danger, but he refused to leave the corpse, despite the busy traffic. Blackie is reportedly cared for by a local yard worker in Tai Kong Po Tsuen, who also tried to get him off the road, but apparently the dog paid no heed to him. Eventually, a driver towed the corpse onto a pavement and Blackie finally got out of the traffic.

Li said that she saw the dogs on the pavement many hours later, despite people having contacted the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department. The body was reportedly picked up at 2am on Thursday, at which point Blackie reluctantly parted ways with his friend.

Blackie’s touching display of loyalty reminded us at Coconuts HQ of the unwavering loyalty of Hachiko the Akita. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the story, Hachiko used to meet his owner at Shibuya Station in Japan every day, and continued to make the journey every day for nearly 10 years after his owner died.

Sniff, discreet tear wipe.
