Filipino man’s generous HKD500 loan to stranger goes viral

One woman’s account of a complete stranger’s act of generosity towards her has gone viral on social media, with many netizens calling the man a good Samaritan.

The woman, surnamed Lui, said that she boarded a minibus near her home in Sai Kung to Causeway Bay on Nov. 13 before realising she had forgotten her wallet.

While the minibus driver agreed to let her ride the bus on credit, she still needed cash for other expenses. Turning to the Filipino man sitting next to her, Lui asked to borrow HKD20, which she promised to return to him.

The stranger apparently did not hesitate to offer her HKD100, which he increased to HKD500 after learning she was meeting her friends for dinner in Causeway Bay.

Despite Lui’s claims that she did not need the full HKD500, the man insisted that she accept it. Lui said that man was so trusting that he did not even ask for her phone number, but she took his one down to repay him, which she did the very next day.

While some commenters have cast doubts on the true generosity of the man’s act, Lui told Metro HK that she could tell the man was not very well off when they had a conversation about renting flats in Sai Kung, which made his magnanimity even more touching.
