Three Hong Kong men were given long jail terms for drug trafficking in Jakarta yesterday, two weeks after an unrelated case saw Hong Kong drug lord Wong Chi-ping sentenced to death in Indonesia.
The men were spared the death penalty, despite prosecutors calling for capital punishment after they were caught with 49 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine in Jakarta.
Two of the men, Kwok Fu-ho and Yang Wing-bun, were given 20-year jail terms each, while the third, Ko Chi-yuen, was sentenced for life, AFP reports.
The judge for Ko’s case, Edi Hasmi, said “What the defendant has done is against Indonesia’s stance on fighting drugs.”
Indonesia has some of the world’s toughest anti-narcotics laws, which has only been getting tougher under President Joko Widodo.
Widodo is a vocal supporter of capital punishment for drug traffickers; during his presidency, 14 drug convicts have been executed, 12 of whom were foreign.
