Elderly woman in coma after being dragged under truck, leaving 300m trail of blood

An 86-year-old woman is in a coma after she was dragged underneath a truck for 300 metres in Kowloon at around 10am yesterday.

The woman, surnamed Chan, was reportedly trying to cross the road by walking in between a car and a truck that were waiting for a green light. However, as the light turned green, the truck driver apparently didn’t see her and began to drive.

Chan was reportedly trapped underneath the truck, where it is suspected that her trousers caught on a piece of the frame, leading to her being dragged for an estimated 300 metres from Ma Tau Kok Road to Ma Tau Chung Road in Kowloon City.

Chan was only freed after the truck stopped at a light and a nearby taxi passenger ran to notify the oblivious truck driver.

Firefighters from the fire station the truck had helpfully stopped outside of rushed to free Chan, but Oriental Daily reports that she was already in a coma. Chan has since been admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital with severe injuries to her legs, which may require amputation.

Police arrested the 55-year-old truck driver, surnamed Chung, for causing serious injury by dangerous driving, but he has since been released on bail.
