Feathering the nest: TVB ridiculed for blatant KFC product placement at anniversary awards

An out-of-place product placement during TVB’s annual Hong Kong awards ceremony has irked some viewers, as the cameras zoomed in on product logos and focused on smartly-dressed celebrities (inelegantly) devouring KFC fried chicken during the show.

The apparent product placement for Kentucky Fried Chicken happened in the middle of Sunday night’s programme, when boxes of fried chicken were suddenly brought out onto the stage.

Here comes dinner: TVB screengrab via Apple Daily.

The boxes were passed along on stage by elegantly-dressed celebrities, who then awkwardly devoured the fried food, trying not to ruin their outfits and makeup.

A similar product placement was used in the Oscars last year when Ellen DeGeneres joked about the attendees’ hunger and bought “pizza for everyone” from Big Mama’s & Papa’s Pizza.

TVB’s copycat attempt of DeGeneres’ stunt has so far earned them six complaints to the Communications Authority.
