Cat Fight: CY Leung caught in second copyright gaffe, this time with Hello Kitty

Hong Kong’s Chief Executive CY Leung is on a roll. The embattled politician has found himself in a second copyright infringement row in one week, after netizens noticed he uploaded photos of Hello Kitty buns to Facebook on Sunday without listing the source.

According to HKFP, Leung uploaded two photos of the cutesy buns to Facebook, claiming that he bought them from Hong Kong Brands & Products Expo for some primary school students who were due to come government house to discuss their New Year’s wishes. Bet they can’t wait for that.

Scholarism member Agnes Chow, however, drew attention to the potential problems with Leung’s post on her Facebook account. She wrote that it could be a criminal offence to not list the sources once the controversial “Internet Article 23” is passed.

The debate on the amendments to Hong Kong’s copyright laws will take place today. Opponents, who plan to protests outside LegCo from 4pm, say the proposed changes will limit internet freedom.

“Maybe the Chief Executive is indeed transcendent,” Chow said. Miaow!

Prior to this, another controversy ignited when Leung uploaded a video of himself singing Beyond’s hit song “Like You” at the anniversary dinner of a pro-Beijing political party on Monday. Discussion again arose over whether Leung could have broken copyright laws as he failed to apply for the relevant licenses before uploading the content.

The Chief Executive’s Office confessed that Leung’s actions were “not ideal”, and only applied for a licence after the video had been uploaded.
