10lb schoolbag credited for survival of 9 y/o in fatal minibus crash

A heavy schoolbag has been credited as the reason a nine-year-old schoolgirl, surnamed Tang, walked away from Friday’s fatal minibus crash relatively unscathed.

According to Apple Daily, the Primary 4 student’s backpack was stuffed with two jackets and five books, weighing a combined 10 pounds, and was so large that it took up most of her seat.

However, Tang’s mother told Apple Daily that she believed the bulky bag saved her daughter’s life, as it weighed her down while the minibus flipped on its side and stopped her from being propelled from the wreckage.

The nine-year-old reportedly grazed her wrists and ankles, but was discharged from the hospital soon after her wounds were dressed.

Tang, who had boarded the minibus in Kam Tin after school on Friday, was one of 14 who were injured when a cargo truck driver ran a red light and collided with the bus. Four people, including one three-month-old baby girl, died in the tragic crash, and six people remain in hospital to receive treatment for their injuries.
