Reports: wife of missing bookseller says he’s made contact, withdraws police report

Missing bookseller Lee Bo, who disappeared from Hong Kong last Wednesday, has allegedly gotten in touch with a friend, leading his wife, Sophie Choi, to rescind her request for police aid.

The SCMP reports that Choi visited North Point police station and told officers that Lee had gotten in touch with an associate yesterday.

Yesterday evening, a handwritten letter believed to be faxed from Lee to his colleague was published by the Central News Agency in Taiwan. The letter, dated Sunday, said “I had to handle the issue concerned urgently, and cannot let outsiders know it.”

In the letter, Lee added that operations at the bookshop should continue as normal, assuring his friend that “I am now very good and everything is normal.”

A government source told the SCMP that police will continue the investigation despite Choi’s withdrawal, and “follow up on the case in a proactive manner.”

At the time of writing, it is not known whether Lee is in Shenzhen or Hong Kong, and if he is safe or not.
