That’s a new one! Four arrested for trying to smuggle eels into Hong Kong

Four slippery individuals were arrested by Hong Kong customs yesterday for trying to smuggle around 109 kilograms of European eel (interesting drug alternative, probably tough to snort) through Hong Kong International Airport.

The shifty foursome – three males and one female – who were flying from Madrid via Abu Dhabi, tried to hide the supply in their checked baggage.

The cases were passed on to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up investigations once the slippery stash had been sniffed out during Customs clearance.

Importing endangered species without a licence can incur a maximum fine of HKD5 million and two years’ imprisonment. Plus, it might make your luggage smell terrible.
