Police: no truth in rumours of ‘fake refugees’ robbing Yuen Long residents

Viral audio clips purporting that South Asians posing as refugees are robbing people at knife point don’t have any truth to them, a Yuen Long police commander said.

According to Sing Tao Daily (as translated by EJI), district councillor Yuen Man-yee brought the audio clips to the attention of the senior official, Fok Lok-sang.

Fok reportedly dismissed the rumours, saying, that out of the 31 robberies recorded in Yuen Long in the last 11 months, only six were carried out by non-Chinese suspects.

In one clip, which went viral on Whatsapp, a man can be heard saying that there are “at least” two or three cases of robbery at knifepoint a day on the streets of Yuen Long and Tsuen Wan, perpetrated by South Asians posing as refugees.

The man, who has not been identified, can also be heard saying that the “fake refugee” problem has gotten out of control.

A woman in another clip was recorded saying that one of her friends was robbed by a person of South Asian descent while crossing a street in Yuen Long.
