Snow rumours get Hong Kong in a flurry, but it’s probably just going to be darn cold

Hongkongers are being told to prepare for the coldest weather of the year this weekend, but exciting rumours of the potential snowfall have been quashed by the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO).

The unofficial Hong Kong Weather Information Centre had us all in a flurry yesterday when its 10-day forecast suggested there could be snow in Hong Kong this weekend.

Before you all rush to strap tennis rackets to the bottom of your shoes, the latest predictions from the HKO suggest it won’t even rain this weekend, let alone snow. We may, however, experience single digit temperatures for the first time this winter.

Lows of 9ºC (!) are predicted on Sunday and Monday, thanks to a northeast monsoon affecting the coast of Guangdong, which will be replaced by a strong easterly airstream that will in turn bring a cold spell to our shores.

For the optimists out there, however, as unusual as snow is in Hong Kong’s sub-tropical climate, it can’t be ruled out completely. Snowfall has been recorded four times in the territory since the Second World War, most recently in 1975 – albeit only on Tai Mo Shan, Hong Kong’s highest mountain.
