Taiwanese animators release bitingly satirical take on the missing booksellers case (VIDEO)

The Taiwanese animators who made a name for themselves with humorous clips of CGI-animated news videos have done it again with their no holds barred take on Hong Kong’s missing booksellers case.

In the clip, the Taiwanese animators portray the popular opinion of what happened to Lee Bo and Gui Minhai (but dramatised, of course). Lee’s disappearance is attributed to the popularly-held belief that he was abducted from Hong Kong by mainland agents posing as customers, who, according to the animation, are huge, anthropomorphic pandas.

Later, Chinese president Xi Jinping – whose rumoured love affairs were reportedly due to be revealed in a book by the publisher the men work for – is shown handcuffed to a bed (in sexy ladies’ underwear) while being whipped by a woman in a plush Hello Kitty head. We’ve all had that fantasy, right?

Gui Minhai, who recently surfaced in a “confession” video, claiming to be in China to answer a 11-year-old drunk driving conviction, is depicted to have been abducted from his home in Thailand by an elephant-riding panda.

The clip addresses the public’s dissatisfaction with inconsistencies in Gui’s confession – such as the change of his undershirt halfway through the video – and raises questions about the plausibility of the story in general.

The parody doesn’t stop there, however. Controversial LegCo member Regina Ip is referred to as “Broomhead” (a common and disparaging nickname based on her hairstyle), and is shown cackling after insinuating that Lee Bo left Hong Kong on a boat. She then literally “sweeps [the matter] under the rug” with a makeshift broom made of her own hair. Ouch!

While the Taiwanese animators have obviously taken liberties with some details (for one, the relative proportions of a panda compared to an elephant), the video has made a good attempt at reflecting the current sentiment in Hong Kong towards the case.
