A scrunchie-wearing tabby cat in Wan Chai has won over Hongkongers after a video of her shaking paws, posing as a lucky cat and making the traditional Chinese New Year hand — sorry, paw — gesture went viral this week.
The cat, whose name is Hawaii, lives in a pharmacy in Wan Chai and has won fans all over Hong Kong for her penchant for wearing colourful bracelets and scrunchies around her neck, uncharacteristic willingness to do tricks, and her seemingly untapped potential as a Musical Chairs player.
While many commenters are fans of Hawaii and her human family, others have expressed their concern that she is the victim of animal abuse. Justina Chong, who co-created Hawaii’s Facebook fan page, says she finds the accusations of animal cruelty “deeply disturbing”.
“Hawaii’s parents are wonderfully kind people. They adore Hawaii and treat her like a daughter. Yes, she’s clearly annoyed at having to perform in this video, but she lives a beautiful, healthy life filled with love, admirers, and delicious dried-scallop snacks,” Chong said in a comment.
While we do not yet have the technology to talk to animals (sob), we hope that the accusations are unfounded. It appears from the videos and photo updates that the pharmacist speaks to Hawaii in a very gentle tone, and she is showered with regular affection from her family and customers alike.
