Hong Kong ‘snow’ video gets blizzard of online love

A video seeming to show snow falling in Fanling got Hong Kong in a flurry of excitement over the weekend, although there are doubts about its authenticity. Boo to the naysayers!

The eight-second clip featuring actual white stuff falling out of the sky has been shared so far and wide on Hong Kong’s social media sites that working out where it actually came from originally would be no mean feat. Quite frankly, our brains are too cold to work that hard today.

Needless to say, it sent a shiver through thousands of excitable Hongkongers, hungry for their first taste of snow in 40 years.

However, the killjoys over at the Hong Kong Observatory dismissed the video as “rather suspicious”, according to the SCMP. Senior scientific officer Li Ping-wah said that conditions in Hong Kong remained above freezing on Saturday when it is thought the video was released.

However (and this is a BIG, COLD, WHITE however), it’s not clear how far from the Observatory’s recording station the video was taken. We, for one, have one chilly foot firmly in the believers’ camp.

In case you haven’t heard – probably because you were curled up under a duvet hiding from the world – yesterday was Hong Kong’s coldest day for almost 60 years, with temperatures dropping to 3.3ºC in urban areas.

And the cold climes are to continue throughout today, with the minimum temperature forecast at 3ºC and schools shut across the territory. The weather is set to improve throughout today, however, getting gradually warmer and wetter as the week goes on.
