Hong Kong’s foolhardy ‘frost hunters’ stranded on Tai Mo Shan peak

Daring Hongkongers were treated to an impromptu cold weather slip-n-slide yesterday morning.

After being hit by the coldest weather Hong Kong has seen in decades, locals, dubbed “frost tourists”, hiked up Tai Mo Shan, the territory’s highest peak, hoping to catch sight of the rare phenomenon.

However, their journey became dangerous after the weather conditions made the roads too slippery to walk, resulting in around 20 phone calls to local firefighters.

Rescue efforts were further hindered as car parks at the foot of the mountain were completely full, blocking ambulances from ascending.

The chilly weather has also affected runners participating in a 100-kilometre ultra race; they struggled to finish the Maclehose Trail near Tai Mo Shan and the race was cut short.

Many were unprepared for the icy weather, despite warnings from the organisers. One runner compared the ice-covered trail to a slide.

Two ambulance workers even had to turn away due to the conditions.
