How Hong Kong’s beloved egg tarts are made (VIDEO)

For decades, cha chaan teng (tea restaurant) Wing Hop Sing has been serving delicious, homemade egg tarts: a sweet custard baked into a flaky pastry crust. (You may recognise the restaurant from our previous “How to Make Hong Kong-Style Milk Tea” video.)

But Mr. Hui, the 88-year-old patriarch of the family that runs the restaurant, recently decided to retire, and the establishment moved from Sheung Wan to a smaller location in Sai Ying Pun, where no baked goods will be served.

In this original Coconuts TV video, watch as he teaches his granddaughter how to make egg tarts according to the recipe he’s been using since the 1950s. It was the last time egg tarts were made at the restaurant’s original location, and mostly likely the last time Mr. Hui will ever make egg tarts.
