HKU chairman says students acted like they were ‘on drugs’ when storming meeting

Arthur Li, the embattled chairman on the University of Hong Kong Council, has said students who protested against his appointment earlier this week acted like they were on drugs or poisoned.

“Sadly, [this] small number of students are rather like people who’ve taken drugs, who’ve been poisoned by drugs… they’ve been manipulated, and once you’ve taken drugs, your behaviour can become very irrational,” he said in a press conference yesterday, HKFP reports.

Li was speaking after students stormed a meeting of the council on Tuesday, demanding they reform its structure following Li’s controversial appointment last year.

Li, however, defended Hong Kong Chief Executive CY Leung’s decision to assign him the job, insisting the CE has the right to do so. He also denied accusations of political interference in Hong Kong’s education system.

“Apple Daily criticises everybody every day – you know, any pro-government, any pro-establishment, any pro-Beijing, any faction, is this political interference?” he asked.

Li also accused the Civic Party and pan-democrats of brainwashing students, and Student Union president Billy Fung of lying when he said the council had refused to set up a review panel to examine its structure.
