Erwiana’s former employer says she was ‘framed’, jail is ‘hell’

Law Wan-tung, the Hong Kong woman who was jailed for abusing Indonesian maids Erwiana Sulistyaningsih and Tutik Lestari Ningsih, claims that she was framed and is “in hell”, the SCMP reports.

Law, who was sentenced to six years imprisonment in February last year, made comments to Next Magazine through relatives who visited her in prison, saying she felt “wronged”, “afraid, sad and frustrated”.

The 44-year-old mother of two previously cried in court about being bullied in jail, and said she was made to feel like “a bad person” who “lost [her] freedom”. Somebody should probably explain the concept of imprisonment to her.

“Since I have been here, I miss my family […] I worry that nobody is looking after my children. I don’t sleep or eat well. I always cry,” Law said, before adding that her family had “collapsed”.

She claimed to have “never abused Erwiana” or denied her pay, as well as claiming the helper refused to get medical help for a “strange illness”. Law refuted Erwiana’s claims that she didn’t have time off, countering that “she did not want days off as she would rather have more money”, before saying her former helper “knew how to open the lock” and that the prosecution had “no evidence.”

Eman Villanueva, a rights advocate and Chairman of the Filipino Migrants’ Union in Hong Kong & Macau, said Law’s hardships in prison had caused her to become “delusional”.

The Hongkonger was convicted of 18 out of 20 charges, including assault and criminal intimidation of her former helpers, in February 2015. The case has been used as an example of the violence and discrimination suffered by domestic helpers in Hong Kong after photos of Erwiana’s horrific injuries in Law’s employ received international attention.
