Unrest in Hong Kong’s busiest district erupted during Lunar New Year festivities last night, resulting in what is being called the worst violence since the Occupy Movement in 2014.
Clashes between civilians and police officers began at around 10pm as authorities attempted to crack down on street food hawkers in Mong Kok. The hawkers, who were operating illegally, were defended by citizens visiting the Chinese New Year night market.
As tensions rose between citizens and police, localist group Hong Kong Indigenous called for supporters to gather in Mong Kok for an impromptu march with makeshift riot gear.

Fires were set at junctions in the ordinarily bustling shopping district, as police and protesters continued to clash.

It is reported that tear gas and batons were deployed by police attempting to quell angry protests, and two warning shots were fired from a gun at around 2am.

Many citizens and police officer sustained injuries as a result of the violence, and clips of protesters bleeding profusely or even lying unconscious on the ground have since gone viral on local social media.

The clash has been dubbed the “Fishball Revolution” after the popular street snack which was being sold by hawkers at the market.
