Hong Kong woman dies during cosmetic surgery in Shenzhen, family accuses clinic of cover-up

A 25-year-old Hong Kong woman has died on the operating table of a Shenzhen-based cosmetic surgery hospital, where she was scheduled for two procedures, including a breast augmentation.

Wong’s husband, surnamed Yip, said his wife had paid RMB45,000 (HKD54,000) for a blepharoplasty (double eyelid surgery) and breast augmentation surgery at Tian Mei Cosmetic Surgery Hospital, which was scheduled for around 10.30am yesterday.

Yip claims he sat in the clinic’s waiting room from 10.30am until 5pm, when he was told his wife had passed away due to complications from the anaesthetic used. The clinic’s staff said that they had been trying to revive Wong until that point, but failed in their attempts and she had just died.

An Oriental Daily video shows that Wong’s family mourning over her fully clothed body on the operating table. However, while in the operation room, they reportedly found records that indicated the procedure had ended at 2.40pm. It was later discovered that an ambulance was called, and paramedics confirmed that Wong was dead on the scene at 3pm, Oriental Daily reports.

When Wong’s family asked to speak to the surgeon, Tian Mei staff told them that the attending surgeon (who administered the anaesthetic) Xie Jun had left the clinic.

Wong’s family claimed to have found 10 unidentified bottles in the operating room, which are believed to be hormones used on animals. Later, the clinic reportedly agreed to give Wong’s family the information they needed; however, Wong’s family claims that when they asked to see footage of the operation, Tian Mei said no clips or records of the surgery were to be found.

Wong’s family has accused Tian Mei of covering up the real reason behind the 25-year-old’s death. Police were reportedly called to the scene after the deceased’s family members protested outside the clinic shouting “Tian Mei kills people”.

Wong is survived by her husband and their 4-year-old daughter.
