Second missing bookseller returns to Hong Kong, according to gov’t

Cheung Chi-ping, one of the five missing booksellers, has reportedly returned to Hong Kong, according to a government press release.

Police stated yesterday that Cheung had returned to Hong Kong, just days after Lui Bo. The pair, along with their fellow Mighty Current associate, Lam Wing-kee, recently appeared on state television, ostensibly “confessing” to operating an illicit book circulation office on the mainland under the orders of Gui Minhai.

Like Lui, Cheung reportedly asked officers to cancel his missing person case and declined further assistance from Hong Kong government.

A source told the SCMP that Cheung was not handed over to local authorities by mainland law enforcement officers, but had entered Hong Kong using his HKID at Lo Wu immigration control point.

The government press release concluded, “Police continue to follow through with the other two missing person cases with the Interpol Guangdong Liaison Office of Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department for further details.”
