A cashier at a 7-Eleven in Yau Ma Tei is in intensive care after being stabbed by a shoplifter early yesterday evening, local reports say.

The victim, a 38-year-old man surnamed Cheng, sustained a four-inch-deep wound to his chest, which was apparently made with a fruit knife. At approximately 6.45pm, a customer entered the convenience store on Pitt Street, reportedly stole a packet of crisps, and ate it on the street.

According to Apple Daily, CCTV footage shows Cheng then getting into a physical confrontation with the customer, who was also brandishing a bottle of beer. RTHK reports that the cashier called the police to report a case of shoplifting prior to his stabbing.

When police arrived at the convenience store, however, they found Cheng lying unconscious on the floor, covered in blood, with a four-inch-deep stab wound to his chest.

Cheng has been admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he remains in the intensive care unit.

Cheng’s attacker has been described by police as being of South Asian descent, between the ages of 25 to 35, and wearing jeans, a light-coloured jacket, black and white trainers, and a dark blue baseball cap. Police also say that he was carrying a black backpack and a black messenger bag at the time of the attack.

According to Yau Tsim Mong District Commander Cheng Lai-kei, the assailant ran away in the direction of Portland Street, and is suspected to also be injured. Police dogs reportedly followed blood traces down Nathan Road, leading officers to find the hilt of a knife around 10 metres away from the scene of the attack.

Witnesses reported seeing a man matching the suspect’s description was running to a supermarket on Waterloo Road, while police dogs also reportedly found a trail of blood leading to the same supermarket.

Police officers from Yau Tsim Mong District are currently searching for Cheng’s attacker.
