Over the past few weeks, Hong Kong has seen an unusually high number of red tides all over its waters. Red tides, which can be a natural phenomenon, also occur when polluted runoffs bring excess nutrients into the sea, causing a boom in the growth of algae.
Depending on the species of algae, they can be either toxic or harmless. The government says that the most recent cases are non-toxic, but severe red tides over the winter caused millions in damages to local fish farmers.
