One of the world’s biggest photography competitions, the Sony World Photography Awards, yesterday named Hong Kong photographer Jimmi Ho the winner of the Hong Kong National Award.
Ho, who’s a student, said that he’s “really excited to hear the news” and will use his win as motivation to continue taking photos – despite his parents’ belief that being an artist doesn’t quite qualify as a career. Brownie points to Jimmi for sticking it to the man and pursuing his passions.
His photo “Childhood” captures a young boy playing basketball in Choi Hung Estate in Wong Tai Sin. The young photographer says he aimed to depict the often brief opportunities for children in Hong Kong to find time for leisure and freedom in their busy schedules of study and extracurricular education. The photo will appear in London’s Somerset House between April 22 and May 8.
Second place was given to Sun Wai-kwok’s photo “Fashion Cover-up”.
Tugo Cheng’s photo of a working fisherman took third prize.
