Sai Ying Pun restaurant introduces Hong Kong to health fad no one asked for: the Taco Cleanse

The worst thing about “detoxes” and “cleanses” – besides the fact that they’re usually extortionately priced BS sold through mumbo-jumbo – is that you can’t stuff your face as you please, like you normally do. But praise be the patron saints of the reluctantly healthy: you can finally try the Taco Cleanse Program.

Taco Chaca, which has been around since 2011 (an ancient time during which it claims it was “the only restaurant that served California-style Mexican cuisine in Hong Kong”), has re-opened in a new location on Second Street in Sai Ying Pun. Along with revamping its menu, the OG LA-street-style taqueria has jumped on one of Hong Kong’s favourite bandwagons: cleansing, except they’re acknowledging how great having solid food actually is!

The restaurant claims that the cleanse, which will be launched this spring, will “leave you feeling more energised and rejuvenated” after only three days. According to their reps, the Taco Cleanse has been been popular in Los Angeles, and celebrities, including your favourite friend Jennifer Aniston, have tried it. Cosmopolitan.com confirms that it is indeed a real thing, invented by self-proclaimed “taco scientists”.

Their pollo burrito. (This is not part of their cleanse though. Sorry.)

You can do the cleanse à-la-carte-style and just order one of their three new vegan tacos: Barbacoa Mushrooms Taco, Tranquility Avocado Taco and Enzymatic Tofu Taco at HKD35 each in-store. (Unfortunately the restaurant also neglected to send us any photos of these tacos, presumably because they don’t look anywhere near as tasty as their non-vegan options.)

Alternatively, hardcore taco cleansers can purchase a three- or seven-day cleanse kit (the former will cost HKD225 while the price is TBA for the latter), which includes all the ingredients and instructions you need to create your own tacos for your very own semi-DIY taco cleanse.

So basically, it’s veggies in a taco. But can we have ours with a margarita?
