A 50-year-old construction worker was arrested after allegedly pushing over an elderly woman and robbing her in a Kwai Hing restaurant.
A video of the apparent robbery was posted onto social media on Friday afternoon, after which it was widely shared by local netizens, who called the thief “heartless” for “not even sparing a little old granny”.
The surveillance footage appears to show an elderly woman with a cane walking slowly through a restaurant corridor at Kwai Hing Shopping Centre, and a man then pushing her down before hurrying away with a handbag.
The video caption indicated that the assault had taken place at around 10am on Friday. Oriental Daily reports that the victim, an 89-year-old surnamed Chu, was robbed of HKD500 in cash, a watch, a senior citizen Octopus card, and her HKID, worth a total of HKD1,200.
Chu was hospitalised for injuries to her head. At around 10pm that day, police reportedly arrested a 50-year-old construction worker from Shek Lei Estate.
Police have seized a bag they believed to be connected to Chu’s robbery. In Tsuen Wan Magistrates’ Court today, the defendant was denied bail, although he had reportedly not made a bail application. His case has been adjourned until April 1.
