Man and twin daughters rescued after getting trapped in MTR station room where he was changing their diapers

Police officers and firefighters almost had to bust down the door of a makeshift baby changing room at Hung Hom MTR station on Sunday after a father and his twin toddlers got trapped inside.

At around 7:10pm on Sunday, a man, surnamed Wong, asked MTR staff for their help as he wanted to change his daughters’ diapers before taking them on the long train journey back home to Tai Po, Apple Daily reports.

Staff led Wong to a room near the customer service counter which he described as “quite makeshift”, with telephones and computers as well as a baby changing station.

After changing his daughters’ diapers, Wong said he tried to leave the room, but couldn’t unlock it using the keypad. The father said he tried banging on the door for around 10 minutes, but received no response from staff.

Wong then called the police and reported that his two-year-old daughters were getting scared while they waited.

Police officers arrived shortly with firefighters in tow. MTR staff reportedly also had trouble opening the door for approximately 10 minutes and firefighters were “ready to break the door down”, when one staff member managed to open it with a key at around 7:40pm.

Wong complained about the incident to MTR staff, and later told Apple Daily that he thought it was “very serious”, and criticised MTR Corp for failing to install proper nursing rooms for parents.

A spokesperson for MTR Corp. said there are currently no plans to install nursing and baby changing facilities, but passengers in need can ask staff to make “appropriate arrangements”.

District Councillor Gary Fan, who is part of LegCo’s Traffic and Transport Committee, told Apple Daily that he proposed the MTR install public bathrooms 10 years ago, but over 80 percent of stations still have no such facilities.

Fan said, “The MTR doesn’t lack resources [to fund facilities]. Its management refuses to allocate resources.”
