Worldwide hit musical Wicked comes to Hong Kong

This December, the hit musical Wicked will make its debut performance in Hong Kong. Cool, only took 13 years for it to get here.

For those of you that don’t know anything about Wicked, it’s probably best pitched as the prequel to L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Here’s the official poster art to jog your memory:

Wicked follows the story of Glinda and green-skinned Elphaba through their friendship and rivalry during sorcery school. You might better recognise these characters as the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West – the musical basically paints an alternative history for how the characters came to be (also known as revisionism, but we’ll get to that another time) through show tunes and storytelling.

Wicked has been performed in 100 cities, 14 countries and translated into six languages… none of which are Cantonese, so you’ll be watching this in English if you buy a ticket. To be fair, if you’re reading this article, you’ll probably do just fine at an English-language show.

Wicked on tour

The show has picked up over 100 awards so far and is a worldwide hit, having been seen by 50 million people. Seems like it’s pretty Popular.

Following a record-breaking tour of the UK, Ireland and Singapore, the musical will be in Hong Kong from the beginning of December to the beginning of January – perfect for families looking to take in a matinee over Christmas, or expats who don’t know how to talk to their visiting parents (we’re only half joking).

Tickets go on sale on May 19, although American Express Centurion Card holders can book tickets now.

Having seen Wicked, we’d highly recommend it – you’ll come out of the theatre feeling like you’re Defying Gravity.
