Taxi driver fined HKD3,000 for refusing cross-harbour fare and smoking with a passenger onboard

In what we’re hoping will be one of many wins against “black taxis” (a term for rude drivers with poor customer service skills, to say the least), a cabbie has just been fined HKD3,000 for his inhospitable (and illegal) behaviour.

Hong Kong man Faisal Mohammed took a cabbie to court when the driver not only flat-out refused to drive Mohammed from TST to Central after he’d boarded the car (illegal), but also lit up a cigarette while waiting for the police (hint: also illegal).

The driver in question was found guilty of both offences, for which he was fined HKD1,500 each, according to the verdict shared on Mohammed’s Facebook page

Speaking to HK Magazine, Mohammed said the process was “quite lengthy and painful” – the incident took place on Sept. 18, but was only just resolved after a trial in late April.

Mohammed urged fellow Hongkongers to follow his example in order to affect “industry-wide change”. The #BiWinner sagely said, “If tomorrow, everyone in Lan Kwai Fong calls the cops for each incident, I’m sure the cops will also get irritated and do their job.”
