The US’ Daily Show mocks Hong Kong authorities for gluing down pavement for Zhang Dejiang visit (VIDEO)

It seems like the spectacular security measures employed during Zhang Dejiang’s recent visit to Hong Kong were so ridiculous that they managed to catch the attention of professional snarkers all the way in the USA.

The apparently Art Attack-inspired “counter-terrorism tactics” used by Hong Kong authorities were lampooned on last Thursday’s episode of The Daily Show, an American late-night satirical news show.

In reference to a CNN report by Kristie Lu Stout about the government’s handling of protesters, host Trevor Noah incredulously said, “They’ve started gluing down their sidewalks?” and added, “You’ve got to admit, that’s a pretty smart solution. Yeah, because it’s stops the violence, and it makes the protesters look weak.”

Impersonating a protester, Noah says, “I’ll show you, government!” before miming a failed attempt to uproot pavement bricks. “You know what, I’ll just write a letter, then I’m gonna go to the gym.”

“It’s also interesting logic from the Chinese government,” Noah mused. “So they were basically like, ‘Hey, uh, should we spend some money and address the concerns of our citizens?’ and someone was like, ‘Nah. Let’s buy glue. We’ll buy glue.'”
