Power cut plunges parts of Central MTR Station into darkness

Coconauts passing through Central MTR Station this afternoon should have their phone flashlights at the ready, as parts of the station were apparently plunged into darkness around an hour ago following a sudden power cut.

While MTR’s Service Update page says train services are running as usual, some escalators appear to have been cordoned off to prevent access, according to photos posted by curious commuters.

Multiple netizens who re-shared photos from the scene commented that they expected better service from MTR Corp., due to upcoming fare hikes.

Police officers and MTR personnel with hand-held flashlights have been deployed to aid passengers navigate the station.

Emergency floodlights have been turned on in the meantime, and MTR Corp. has not stated when the lights are expected to come on again.

A more recent update from MTR Corp. states that some ticket gates and escalators are temporarily out of service, while the elevator that connects the concourse to all platforms is also out of service.

EDITOR’S NOTE: A previous version of this article stated that the affected MTR station was “Hong Kong”, not “Central”. We regret the error.
