Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot: Temperatures forecast to hit 34 degrees this week

Anyone who’s been outside in the past few days can tell you that it’s really effin’ hot. In fact, it’s all we can talk about.

Good luck, haters of small talk. Judging by the Hong Kong Observatory’s latest forecast, there’s still plenty of inane chatter about the heat, humidity, and sun-damage-fearing, umbrella-toting commuters to come.

However, any of the thousands who took to social media over the weekend to express their delight at the fine, sunny weather and clear blue skies should be thrilled.

According to the HKO’s nine-day forecast, the weather is expected to stay hot and dry until Sunday, thanks to a “subtropical ridge”, which is a large belt of high atmospheric pressure characterised by calm winds.

Temperatures are forecast to peak at 34 degrees Celsius on Thursday and Friday, while humidity is expected to stay low (well, for Hong Kong), ranging between 60 percent to 90 percent until Sunday.

While it looks like there will be some sunshine on Sunday, the subtropical ridge is expected to weaken and let through a few showers before cloudy, rainy weather on Monday and Tuesday.

In light of the Very Hot Weather Warning (which has been issued every day since Saturday), the government has urged members of the public to avoid vigorous exercise and prolonged activities outdoors, and stay hydrated in order to prevent heatstroke.

Word of warning, though: you may want to stay away from those small, smartphone-powered “dragonfly” fans
