Poached Eggs: Tuen Mun Hospital has apparently lost a patient’s ovary and fallopian tube

In a press release (which downplayed the ridiculous feat as a “missing specimen incident”), Tuen Mun Hospital stated that the left ovary and fallopian tube of a 51-year-old female patient went missing after they were removed.

On June 13, the unnamed patient underwent a hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy – meaning she had her uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes removed. According to Tuen Mun Hospital, the specimens were to be screened for cancer.

While the patient’s uterus, right ovary, and right fallopian tube were accounted for, her left ovary and fallopian tube apparently disappeared sometime before June 16, when they were supposed to be examined at the pathology lab (and subsequently discovered to be missing).

Despite the hospital claiming that they conducted “immediate search action” (yes, really), the no-vary and f-elope-ian tube were nowhere to be found.

As of Wednesday evening, when the press release was issued, the elusive samples had yet to resurface.

While screening of the patient’s remaining specimens and tissue reportedly show no signs of cancer, the hospital has vowed to “closely follow up” and monitor her condition.

Out of the 17 public hospitals assessed by the Hospital Authority, Tuen Mun Hospital was ranked worst in terms of surgical performance from 2008 to 2013, as well as 2015. In fact, the fatality ratio for surgical patients was reported to be over double the average. Yikes.

Last July, we reported that the hospital may have incorrectly calibrated a machine used to measure liver enzymes and given incorrect results to thousands of patients over a two-year-period.
